The project will provide relevant educational material on Amazon geologic and biotic history, including ongoing educational programs for primary and secondary students in São Paulo and Manaus, museum exhibits on how to unravel long-term history via drilling, and outreach activities in communities close to drilling sites to enhance public appreciation of how geologic history influenced the forest and its species, thereby stimulating greater interest in conservation of this invaluable resource.
Outreach activities will include presentation of drilling activities and science outcomes in diverse media (radio and television programs, newspapers, internet podcasts, social media like Twitter and Facebook), museum exhibitions, and talks. One exhibition is planned in the Geosciences Museum at the Institute of Geosciences of USP. The planning of a main exhibition at MuBE (Museu Brasileiro de Escultura e Ecologia) is also being considered, in the same way as the Art & Science exhibition “Amazonia: Os Novos Viajantes”, which was organized under the Thematic Project “Assembly and evolution of the Amazonian Biota and its environment: An integrative approach” (FAPESP 2012/50260-6, NSF 1241066) and had the PI Lúcia Lohmann as co-curator. For this exhibition, artists joined one sampling campaign to the Amazon, producing specific artwork (pictures, paintings, sculptures and movies) related to the project.
Students from Brazilian participant institutions will take part in drilling and subsequent studies, exposing them to a wide range of tools and approaches and fostering interdisciplinary skills through their interactions with a diverse international multidisciplinary team. Project participants are also engaged in teaching classes at their home institutions, presenting public lectures, and developing materials for museums and other educational forums that translate science to the broader public.
